CO progressives break media blackout on Allard lunacy

Colorado Media Matters reports that SquareState is the only media outlet in Colorado that reported on Senator Wayne Allard's amendment to abolish the federal minimum wage.  According to CMM:

No Colorado newspapers reported on U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard's effort to abolish the federal minimum wage through an amendment to the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007, even though some did publish articles about another Allard amendment to the same bill.

Colorado Media Matters searched the following Colorado newspapers using the Nexis and Factiva online databases, Google, and the newspapers' websites: The Aspen Times, Cherry Creek News, the Craig Daily Press, the Daily Camera of Boulder, The Daily Sentinel of Grand Junction, the Denver Business Journal, The Denver Post, The Durango Herald, the Fort Collins Coloradoan, The Gazette of Colorado Springs, the Greeley Tribune, the Montrose Daily Press, The Pueblo Chieftain, the Rocky Mountain News, the Summit Daily News, and the Vail Daily.

That's right -- not a single story on this amendment in any of these Colorado newspapers.  Is it all some big right wing media conspiracy?  Well, CMM notes that Allard issued a press release about his other (immigration related) amendment to the minimum wage bill, but he did not issue a press release about his minimum wage ban.

So it probably isn't that the Colorado media actively covered up the story.  It's more likely that they are just used to getting spoon fed press releases from politicians and reworking them into "news stories."  So Allard could cover up his own shameful amendment by just not talking about it.

Before progressives harnessed the internet, politicans probably got away with stuff like this all the time.  But here in Colorado, where we have SquareState as well as the first state level Media Matters operation, stories like Allard's attempt to eliminate the federal minimum wage will see the light of day, regardless of laziness in the traditional media.

It will be interesting to see if any of the Colorado media outlets identified by Colorado Media Matters will now be shamed into reporting on this story.

Re: Allard (3.00 / 1)

Actually, I am encouraged to see right-wingers like Allard come out in the open about their depraved intentions.  It makes them easier to defeat.  As for the mainstream media outlets, they are not our friends, and never will be.  This means promotion of our websites and outlets is an integral part of advancing the progressive agenda in all ways.

Allard lunacy (none / 0)

I think the biggest likelyhood is that because Allard isn't running for reelection, there isn't a horse-race story to tell.

CO progressives break media blackout on Allard (none / 0)

Was there any sort of vote on Allard's amendment?  If so, what Senators voted for it?

If there hasn't been a vote yet, boy I can't wait to see that one!  The TV ads just write themselves...
"When Joe Schmoe was representing you in the Senate, guess what he thought was a fair amount to set the minimum wage?  $5.15?  $6?  $7.25?  Guess again.  ZERO.  That's right, Senator Schmoe voted to eliminate the minimum wage entirely!..."

28 Senators voted to abolish minimum wage (none / 0)

Results here.

Here's the roll of shame:

 * Alexander (R-TN)
  * Allard (R-CO)
  * Bennett (R-UT)
  * Bond (R-MO)
  * Brownback (R-KS)
  * Bunning (R-KY)
  * Burr (R-NC)
  * Chambliss (R-GA)
  * Coburn (R-OK)
  * Cochran (R-MS)
  * Cornyn (R-TX)
  * Craig (R-ID)
  * Crapo (R-ID)
  * DeMint (R-SC)
  * Ensign (R-NV)
  * Enzi (R-WY)
  * Graham (R-SC)
  * Gregg (R-NH)
  * Hagel (R-NE)
  * Hatch (R-UT)
  * Inhofe (R-OK)
  * Isakson (R-GA)
  * Kyl (R-AZ)
  * Lott (R-MS)
  * McCain (R-AZ)
  * McConnell (R-KY)
  * Sununu (R-NH)
  * Thomas (R-WY)

What's bizarre about this whole thing is that if Allard believes this kind of amendment is fine now that he is not running for re-election, why not issue a press release?  Isn't the point to show how Republicans are ideologically different from Democrats?

The CO Dem Party (none / 0)

should've put out a release on Allard's amendment (if they didn't).

Reporters are often notified of stories via press releases.  Fight fire with fire.

This doesn't excuse the media for not paying closer attention to CO's elected representatives in D.C., but CO Dems have their part in all this, too.
